Maafushi Beaches — Bikini Beach & Beyond
Maafushi has some of the most accessible and beautiful beaches on any local island in the Maldives. Here is what to expect and everything you need to know before you visit.
Bikini Beach (Tourist Beach)
Maafushi's bikini beach is the island's dedicated tourist beach — one of the only beaches on a local Maldivian island where visitors are permitted to wear swimwear and bikinis. It stretches for approximately 300 metres along the eastern shore of the island.
The beach features powdery white sand, shallow turquoise water, and excellent conditions for swimming and sunbathing. A lagoon structure means the water inside is calm even when seas are rougher outside. The beach gets busier in the late morning and afternoon; arriving before 9am means you will often have it to yourself.
Along the beach strip you will find sun loungers and umbrellas for rent (around $5–10/day), a few beach cafes and juice bars, water sports operators, and snorkeling gear rental. The atmosphere is relaxed and safe.
Beach Rules
Bikinis and swimwear are permitted on the designated tourist beach only. Outside this area (streets, restaurants, local beach), you must dress modestly — cover shoulders and knees. This applies to all visitors regardless of gender.
Local Beach & Swimming Lagoon
On the opposite side of the island, the local beach is used primarily by Maafushi residents. The water here is exceptionally calm and very shallow — ideal for children learning to swim or those who prefer gentler conditions.
Modest clothing is required on the local beach. It is a beautiful spot in the evening when local families gather, and gives a more authentic sense of Maldivian island life.
Snorkeling from the Beach
The house reef off Maafushi's bikini beach offers accessible snorkeling from shore. Sea turtles are regularly spotted in the shallower areas near the beach edge. For the best reef snorkeling, take a short boat trip to the channel drop-offs nearby — bookable through any dive shop or your hotel.

Arrive early
Bikini beach is quietest before 9am — perfect for photos and peaceful swimming.
Bring reef-safe sunscreen
Regular sunscreen harms coral. Use mineral sunscreen to protect the reef.
Rent a sun lounger
Operators on the beach charge $5–10 for a lounger and umbrella for the full day.
Cover up when leaving
Carry a sarong or cover-up — required as soon as you step off the tourist beach.
Swim within the lagoon
Stick to the inner lagoon area for calm, safe swimming. Check with locals about currents.
Best snorkeling: morning
Water clarity and fish activity is best in the early morning before wind picks up.
